In 2018, Bing Liu emerged as an exciting new filmmaker with his soul-searching skater documentary Minding the Gap, a deeply personal treatise on domestic violence and toxic masculinity in which his own family life heavily featured. But with All These Sons, Liu takes a step back and takes himself out of the frame to focus on gun violence in Chicago, tracing the wide-reaching issue through two organizations dedicated to helping troubled young Black men.

The news broke via The Hollywood Reporter, who relayed details about the film’s plot. The story follows the relationship of Sherman (Black) and Will (Cube) after Sherman falls in love with Will’s mom. While the synopsis is pretty vague, one can only cringe at the premise. However, that can make for some great comedy, especially with the right people on board.

“His name was Ciccio, so we recast him as a goon for our [villain] Ercole, and they were on a bigger quest. They were going to become human. They were going to turn fully human, and there were magical tokens, and we realized that it needed to be more focused on the friendship. We got rid of the third wheel, we kept Luca and Alberto a little more at the center, and we realized that is really what we’re interested in here.”

Loki is debuting new episodes on Wednesdays on Disney+, and the first two episodes are available now.

“At Amblin, storytelling will forever be at the center of everything we do, and from the minute Ted (Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer) and I started discussing a partnership, it was abundantly clear that we had an amazing opportunity to tell new stories together and reach audiences in new ways,” Spielberg said in a statement. “This new avenue for our films, alongside the stories we continue to tell with our longtime family at Universal and our other partners, will be incredibly fulfilling for me personally since we get to embark on it together with Ted, and I can’t wait to get started with him, Scott [Stuber], and the entire Netflix team.”

In a separate interview, Spielberg said: “I would never remake one of my own movies — starting with Jaws — but there are Amblin titles in the library that could inspire new stories that were made popular by the films,” he said. “There isn’t a single title that I’ve earmarked, but yes, I would like to. I will be discussing that with Jeff [Skoll] and Ronnie [Meyer] and Donna [Langley].” backpack
